Why? Possibly because we put our trust in our wealth more than in our Lord, as did this rich young ruler. Keeping our material things, at the expense of others, is a sin. John offers us a direct application of the love of God. We are called to provide for others and not just through prayer. Compassion and generosity are the ways we keep our hearts right with God.
